Targeting Children With Treats

Here's a great idea I got from Joel Salatin in The Sheer Ecstasy of Being a Lunatic Farmer.

Rather than spend more money on healthy eating initiatives or agencies, stop government subsidies for corn that will be turned into high fructose corn syrup.  The price of sugar laden goodies and snacks will have to increase and families will, hopefully, cut down on buying them!  What if a bag of oranges costs half as much as a box of goodies?  I'm probably thinking much too simplistically, but it sounds like a win-win to me!

  2. Very wise point. Corn syrup is very, very bad--Britain has realized it, and is backing away from it by leaps and bounds.

Sharon--the almost-white potter county yellow transparent apple from last season: any chance my students and I might be able to get a couple of grafting sticks via you? I know (ok, i THINK i know,) that you said the apples were from a tree on another farm.

My kiddos have some interesting things to trade, apple-scion wise, if anyone there is interested.....

Hope the Potter County winter is treating you well. :-)

  4. I lost two members after I posted this article. Do you think they were offended by my "cut subsidies" comment?
